About Martin Schmalenberg — After spending time in Japan studying and working with Hiro Yamaji and Mikio Oshima, Martin has been a frequent guest at workshops and conventions around the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. For 24 years, Martin was the head of Asian Studies at Blair Academy in NJ where he taught Japanese and Chinese history and philosophy. He specializes in the history and art of the Literati class in those counties, and is the author of the book, North American Bonsai, and has written extensively for bonsai journals and magazines. He is scheduled to be a featured artist at the May 2022 Rendevous on the River convention in Mississippi. He currently resides in Stillwater, NJ and operates Stillwater Studio on the premises.
